Athletic Highlights: March 5-March 12, 2018
Baseball: The Lions went 0-3 versus No. 22 ranked Wingate Bulldogs on the road in South Atlantic Conference play. Mars Hill fell 7-3 on Friday. Leading 5-2 in the bottom of the ninth in game one of Saturday's double-header, the Lions conceded four straight runs to fall 6-5 and once again in game two, leading late, Mars Hill lost a 3-2 lead by giving up two runs in the bottom of the seventh to lose 4-3.
Softball: Mars Hill went 1-1 against King on Saturday afternoon. Leading 6-3 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Lions allowed six runs to enter the top of the seventh down 9-6. They tacked on one run in the top of the seventh but were unable to reclaim the lead. In game two, the Lions rebounded with a 5-3 win to improve their record to 9-5 on the year.
Men's Tennis: The Lions went 1-1 during the week, downing Southern Wesleyan 5-4, but losing to Lenoir-Rhyne in South Atlantic Conference play 7-2. Ben Reid picked up two singles victories and a doubles win versus the Bears with partner Rodrigo Ramos.
Women's Tennis: Jasha Geerdink picked up two singles wins and doubles win versus Southern Wesleyan as the Lions went 0-2 against Southern Wesleyan and Lenoir-Rhyne this past week. Evan Lake won her singles match against SWU and was Geerdink's partner in the doubles win.
Women's Golf: Mars Hill finished fourth at the Pfeiffer Spring Invitational with Janie Gooch as the top finisher, placing fourth overall. Gooch set a Mars Hill record for lowest two-day score, shooting 148 (+4). The mark is five strokes better than the previous record.
Women's Lacrosse: The Lions went 1-1 over the weekend, losing to Alabama-Huntsville 25-5, but coming back to win a thriller against Montevallo, 15-14, on Sunday afternoon. Olivia Hokanson had 10 goals over the two contests, including her game-winning goal on Sunday that was her ninth of the afternoon.
Men's Lacrosse: Mars Hill fell to Tusculum in their South Atlantic Conference opening contest, 13-5, on the road. Dima Ferreira and Jake Trafton each had a goal and an assist.
