Lions, Eagles draw in conference opener

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill Lions battled to a 0-0 draw against Carson-Newman University Wednesday evening at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.

After a tightly contested ninety minutes, the Lions and Eagles continued their efforts in the extra frames. Shot attempts by Evan Harr and Tom Read of the Eagles in the dying minutes gave the Lions' faithful a scare, but both attempts ultimately went wide.

Read led the Eagles with six shots.  Oscar Mitchell took three attempts for Mars Hill.

Both goalkeepers, Twan Verweij and Ben Lucas, made two saves apiece for their respective squads.

The match opened conference play for both teams.  Carson-Newman goes to 2-1-1 on the season.

Mars Hill (0-3-1, 0-0-1 SAC) travels to Catawba on Saturday, September 16 to look for their first victory of the season.
