Foust scores seven in Lions' season opening win over Erskine

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's lacrosse team (1-0) opened up the 2019 campaign with a 16-13 win over the Flying Fleet of Erskine (0-3) Wednesday night inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.

Finding themselves down 2-0 after two Katie Schlagenhauf goals with 9:30 elapsed in the first half, Mars Hill's Kiersten Foust began a 5-0 run for Mars Hill to take the lead.  She scored four of the five goals in that run, three on the free position.  Sandwiched between her four goals, Maria Fabrizio scored her first collegiate goal.

Erskine responded with three straight tallies, two from Kayleigh Burns on the man-advantage, to tie the game at five with 14:23 remaining in the half.  After trading goals to make it 6-6, Molly Tobias scored a natural hat-trick to put Mars Hill up 9-6 with 5:01 remaining in the first frame.  Burns closed out the half by scoring two for the Flying Fleet to enter the half trailing 9-8.

Burns continued her offensive attack, scoring the first goal of the second half to knot the game at nine.  Foust and Burns traded tallies before two straight goals from Rebecca Dallman provided Mars Hill a lead they would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest.

Burns, with her eighth goal of the night, pulled Erskine within one, but a 3-0 run by the Lions that included two goals from Foust, pushed the Mars Hill lead to 15-11 with 10:50 left in the contest.  Schlagenhauf scored two goals for the Fleet in the final 8:34 while Tobias added her fifth marker of the night.

Burns led all players with eight goals on the night.  Schlagenhauf added an assist and ended the night with five points.

Foust's seven goals paced the Lions' offense.  Tobias added six points (5g, 1a) while Fabrizio (1g, 3a) contributed four points.

Gini Joy, in her first collegiate start, earned the win, making 10 saves on the night.  Mackenzie Myers suffered the loss, giving up 16 goals on 33 shots.

The Lions return to action on Saturday, February 23rd when they host UVa-Wise in Meares Stadium.  Action is scheduled for 1 p.m.
