ELKINS, W.V. - The Mars Hill women's lacrosse team (3-4) were felled by Davis & Elkins (4-1) by a score of 17-9 in non-conference play on the road Thursday afternoon.
The Senators used a 13-goal first half to propel them to their fourth victory of the season. Goals by Ryann Sumner and Angelina Horan put Davis & Elkins up two before Molly Tobias' marker at 3:57 of the first cut the deficit in half.
Four straight goals, two from the stick of Horan, put the Senators up by five. After assisting on Tobias' marker, Scout Black recorded two straight goals for the Lions to cut the lead in half. With 16:57 remaining in the frame, Davis & Elkins reeled off seven of the next nine goals with Horan scoring three in the run. Sumner added two while Kaitlin Howell and Kathleen Shaw scored the other markers.
Mars Hill tallies were recorded by Rebecca Dallman and Black, collecting her hat-trick with 2:04 left in the first half.
Both teams battled to a 4-4 draw in the second half in more evenly played 30 minutes. The Senators' Sumner scored the opening two goals of the frame while Tobias and Black responded for Mars Hill. Sumner tallied her seventh goal of the night with 10:48 remaining while Black netted her team-high fifth of the contest in response just 1:37 later.
Taylor Burgess scored the final Lions' goal of the contest with 5:26 left while Horan netted her seventh goal of the game with just under five minutes to play.
Sumner and Horan each tallied seven goals with Horan adding an assist to lead all players with eight points on the night. Black led Mars Hill with six points (5g, 1a) followed by Tobias' two goals.
Ebela De La Bay Coffie made 13 saves in the win while Alexa Holleran was credited with the loss, making five saves on 17 shots.
The Lions open South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday, March 16th when they take on Wingate on the road. Action is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
