Men’s Soccer defeats Catawba, 3-1
SALISBURY, N.C. - Three different Mars Hill players scored goals as the Lions defeated Catawba 3-1 on Sunday at Frock Field. With the win, Mars Hill (5-2, 2-0) remains undefeated in South Atlantic Conference play, while Catawba (3-5, 0-1) drops its conference opener.
Mars Hill's Stephen Bivens scored the first goal of the game in the 11th minute. Alex Mullen found Bivens who blasted a shot from 19 yards out over Catawba goalkeeper Evan Harvey. The goal was Bivens' team-leading sixth of the season.
Catawba's Carson Smith tied the game in the 50th minute with his second goal of 2011, but the Lions regained the upper hand for good with two second-half goals. Regis Mawire scored his first goal in a Mars Hill uniform and the game-winner in the 59th minute. He went through the Catawba defense and beat Harvey from 20 yards out.
Giovanni Malnati added an insurance goal in the 81st minute. The unassisted score was Malnati's fourth goal of the year.
The Lions' Zac Scott made four saves, while Harvey had eight. Mars Hill outshot Catawba, 19-6, and held the edge in corner kicks, 5-4.
Mars Hill hosts Newberry on Wednesday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
