Athletic Highlights: February 28 – March 6, 2022
Baseball: The Lions traveled to Lincoln-Memorial on March 1st to play a midweek game against the Railsplitters that they lost by a score of 13-4. The Lions bounced back from the loss to take a series win against Virgina-Wise in the weekend conference series. Tyler Lala has hit seven home runs thus far on the season and sits in third place in the conference, while Zach Weaver has launched four. The Lions currently sit at 9-11 overall, 4-2 SAC, and will host King (Tenn.) on Tuesday at 2:00 PM.
Men's Lacrosse: The Lions four-game win streak came to an end on Saturday as they dropped their match on the road against Tusculum by a score of 16-9. The loss brings their record to 4-2 overall, 0-1 SAC. Senior Zac Carrigan recently set a school record for goals scored in a game, only to be tied by teammate Trevor Kennedy several days later. Carrigan leads the conference in goals (31), while Kennedy sits fourth (27). Goalkeeper Steven Smith holds the third spot in the conference in save percentage at 57.5%. The Lions are in action against Anderson on Saturday inside Meares Stadium.
Women's Lacrosse: The Lions are off to a hot start in their 2022 campaign, winning their first five contests. This week the Lions went on the road to defeat Lees-McRae and Tusculum in convincing victories. Alexa Tazzetta leads the Lions in assists (9) and sits at fourth in the conference, while the Lions' two goalkeepers, Lauren Bryner and Virginia Joy, claim the two and three spots in the conference for save percentage. The Lions play host to Barton College on Tuesday with first draw control set for 2:00 PM inside Meares Stadium.
Softball: The Lions dropped their first conference doubleheader this week against Carson-Newman. They currently sit at 3-11 overall, 0-2 SAC. Shortstop Farley Park is batting .515 and sits second in the conference, while Alicia Wittenhagen has hit four home runs through the first 14 games of the season. The Lions continue conference action on Wednesday as they play host to Anderson at 12:00 PM at Ponder Field.
Men's Tennis: The Lions fell in a pair of conference matches this week against Lenior-Rhyne and Catawba by scores of 7-0 and 4-3. They currently sit at 3-7 overall, 0-4 SAC. The Lions are at home on Friday in conference action against Queens at 2:00 PM.
Women's Tennis: The Lions split on the week, dropping a match to Lenior-Rhyne and defeating Catawba by a score of 5-2. They currently sit at 5-5 overall, 1-3 SAC. The Lions are at home on Friday in conference action against Queens at 2:00 PM.
