MARS HILL, N.C. – Zach Honeycutt has been promoted to head baseball coach at Mars Hill University, and Michael Fitschen has been promoted to assistant coach.
Honeycutt joined the Lions coaching staff in 2018, serving as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator under former head coach Hunter Bryant. Honeycutt's primary duties included serving as pitching coach, working with catchers and baserunning, and assisting with hitter development. He has coached eight players selected in the Major League Baseball first-year amateur draft.
"Coach Bryant did a great job as our head baseball coach for the last three years and four years as an assistant prior to that role," Director of Athletics Rick Baker said. "Although we hate to see him leave, with these promotions, we are in a great position to continue the success of the program."
"I am thrilled to be named the next Head Baseball Coach at Mars Hill University," Honeycutt said. "I want to thank our Director of Athletics Rick Baker and President Tony Floyd for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to lead this program."
A 2015 Mars Hill graduate, Honeycutt spent two years at Lander University before joining the coaching staff at his alma mater. At Lander his primary duties included leading the catching core and assisting in player development with both pitchers and hitters. Before joining the Bearcats, Honeycutt coached with the Forest City Owls of the Coastal Plains League, helping lead the team to the second-half championship of the Western Division and a spot in the Petitt Cup playoffs.
"Coach Honeycutt has done an outstanding job for us as an assistant coach the last four years and has played a crucial role in our recruiting efforts, as evident by our top 10 national ranking with our incoming class," Baker added. "As a Mars Hill alum, Coach Honeycutt will be a strong addition to our MHU Athletic family."
Honeycutt added, "I take much pride and honor in coaching at my alma mater. Being a head coach has always been a dream of mine. I'm excited to continue building the momentum this baseball program has achieved in the past few years."
