MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's soccer team (1-2-1) was defeated 2-0 versus Saint Leo (2-1-1) Monday afternoon.
Saint Leo's Chayse McGirt opened the scoring midway through the first half, netting her first of the year.
Mars Hill came close to equalizing with a shot that struck the crossbar. just moments later. Samantha Swinson's attempt rang off the bar and just eluded rolling behind the goal line to tie the contest at one.
As the second half progressed, Mars Hill pressed hard for a comeback, but their efforts were neutralized by a solid Saint Leo defense. Ella Owen scored the insurance goal, securing the win for Saint Leo.
Owen led all players with three shots followed by two apiece from McGirt and Franziska Theus. Mia Calderon led Mars Hill with two shot attempts. The duo of Camryn Miller and Hanna Johnson combined for three saves.
The Lions return to South Atlantic Conference play on Friday, September 20 when they face Anderson on the road. Kickoff is set for 7 P.M.
