MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions' women's soccer team lost 4-0 to Wingate in both team's South Atlantic Conference opener in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. Mars Hill fell to 0-5 overall, 0-1 SAC. The Bulldogs improved to 4-0 on the year and 1-0 in the league.
Wingate got on the board in the 17th minute, when a cross into the middle was deflected in by a Mars Hill defender. Four minutes later, Gabby Caliendo scored on a header off a pass from Kaitlyn Fletcher to make it 2-0.
The Bulldogs took a three-goal lead in the final minute of the opening half. Kimmi Moore forced a turnover in the MHU zone and netted a goal.
Wingate added an insurance goal eight minutes into the second half. Taylor Leyble took a cross from Victoria Fichman and found the back of the net making it 4-0.
Wingate held a 28-3 advantage in shots, with a 14-0 edge in shots on goal. The Bulldogs also had a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks. Maslyn Greene registered seven saves for the Lions playing 66:08 in goal for MHU. Shelby Savolainen played the final 23:52 in goal for the Lions. Alexis Jones got the win for the Bulldogs in the net.
Mars Hill will play at SAC rival Catawba on Saturday, September 19. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
