Women's Soccer Defeats Southern Wesleyan, 3-1
The Lions defeated Southern Wesleyan 3-0 in women’s soccer action Wednesday night in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. Johnson scores twice.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions defeated Southern Wesleyan 3-0 in women's soccer action Wednesday night in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. Mars Hill improved to 2-7 overall while the Warriors fell to 1-7 on the season.
Breona Tate broke open a scoreless match at the 63:11 mark on a breakaway after a steal. Two minutes later (65:34), Julia Johnson gave the Lions a 2-0 advantage off a quick cross from Tate. Johnson then added her second score of the contest 10 seconds later (65:44) when she kicked the ball past the Warrior's keeper off a rebound. The ball was sent in by Paige Thompson.
Grace Taylor put Southern Wesleyan on the board in the 78th minute when she scored on a breakaway to make the final tally 3-1 in favor of the hosts. Sarah Baldwin provided the assist on the SWU goal.
Mars Hill outshot the Warriors, 26-10. The Lions recorded six corner kicks opposed to SWU taking two corner kicks. Maslyn Greene played 74:53 in goal for the Lions and made one save to earn the win. Shelby Savolainen played the last 15:07 in the net for MHU and also made one save. Courtney McNeil played all 90 minutes in goal for the Warriors and made 13 saves.
Mars Hill will host Coker on Saturday, October 3. The match is set to begin at 5 p.m.
