MHU loses to No. 23 Emory & Henry on Homecoming
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill football team (3-3, 2-2 SAC) was defeated by No. 23 Emory & Henry (6-1, 4-1 SAC) by a score of 48-23 Saturday afternoon.
Tied at seven after the first 15 minutes of play, Emory & Henry exploded for 17 second quarter points, holding Mars Hill's offense scoreless until the second half. Cole Lambert found Tristan Stitt for a 13-yard pass with 10:32 to play in the frame and later, connected with Parker Prioleau for a 59-yard pass. Closing out the Wasps' scoring in the first half was Trace Butcher's 40-yard field goal.
In the second half of play, the Lions were outscored 24-16. The Lions' lone scoring in the third quarter was a safety as Sakarri Morrison and Isaac Weaver recorded a sack on Lambert.
Mars Hill struck twice in the fourth as touchdown receptions were hauled in by Caleb Lominac and Javonte Sherman--the crowned Homecoming king.
The Wasps put up 444 yards of total offense, highlighted by 285 in the air. Mars Hill recorded 367 yards with 290 coming from the passing game.
JR Martin went 24-of-44 for 290 yards with two scores and two interceptions. Jon Gullette led the Lions with 62 rushing yards while Charile Guinade set a new career-high with 10 receptions for 125 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, Omari Sanders-Richardson led the Lions with nine tackles followed by eight from Weaver. William Marzolf added five tackles, 1.5 for loss, including a six-yard sack. Cherron Holt had three tackles and two pass breakups.
Mars Hill takes to the road on Saturday, October 18 when they face Newberry. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
