Mars Hill defeated by Newberry
NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Mars Hill football team (3-4, 2-3 SAC) was defeated by Newberry (6-1, 5-1 SAC) Saturday night by a score of 38-24.
The Wolves scored three touchdowns in the first 5:01 of the first quarter to jump out to a 21-0 lead. With 2:06 left in the quarter, JR Martin put the Lions on the board with a five-yard rushing score.
Mars Hill, late in the half, pulled within 10 as David Hargro caught an 11-yard strike from Martin to enter the half down 24-14.
Early in the third, the Lions clawed to within three as Jon Gullette scored off of a 10-yard rush. With just over a minute to play in the quarter, Newberry's Rico Dorsey Jr. put the Wolves back up by 10, scoring off of a 30-yard rush.
Lon Teachey, with 12:43 left in the contest, hit a season-high 43-yard field to once again bring the Lions within one score.
Newberry racked up nearly 500 yards of offense with 291 coming through the air and 194 on the ground.
Martin wen 21-of-30 for 272 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Both Gullette and Charlie Guinade led the Lions with seven receptions with Guinade leading the team with 94 yards.
On the defensive end, the trio of Sakarri Morrison, Steven Reid, and Caden Hilemon led the Lions with seven tackles apiece.
Mars Hill returns home on Saturday, October 25 when they host Lenoir-Rhyne. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
