MHU record broken, multiple personal and season bests set at Bulldog Invite
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's outdoor track & field team traveled a short distance down the road to compete in the Bulldog Invitational hosted by UNC Asheville.
Athletes faced all the elements, from lightning delays, hail, steady cold rain, high winds, and occasional sunny moments. Despite the conditions, the meet was packed full of success for many Lions - One new school record, four event wins, eight top-8 finishers and several personal bests and season bests.
New School Record
Will Wainwright captured his second event win of the season in Javelin with a new school record throw of 61.25m (200'11"). Wainwright holds the top mark in South Atlantic Conference Standings, second farthest in Southeast Region standings, and currently ranks #31 in NCAA Division II.
Event Win
Jesse Shelton earned event wins in both Shot Put and Discus. Shelton's first throw of competition (16.85m) remained the farthest of any competitor in Shot Put. On day two, Shelton moved into first place with his third throw of six (49.84m). This throw remained the farthest of all competitors.
Luke New jumped a season best 1.86m in high jump to capture first place High Jump.
Top Eight Finishers
Jesse Shelton finished third in the Hammer throw with a mark of 49.39m.
Levi Hill placed seventh in the 110m Hurdles with a personal best 15.87s.
Malik Laurent placed seventh in the 100m sprint with a time of 10.9s.
Matthew O'Connor placed fifth in the 5000m run with a personal best 15:27.90
Eli Taylor placed seventh in the 5000m run with a personal best 15:34.99
Additional Personal Bests and highlights
Charles Fuerneisen ran a personal best 15:52.57 in the 5000m run. Fuerneisen placed 14th overall.
Grant Richardson ran a personal best 16:51.97 in the 5000m run. Richardson placed 27th overall.
Iggy Welch threw a personal best 43.04m in the Hammer Throw. Welch advanced to finals, placing ninth overall in the end.
Justus Shelton threw a personal best 39.36m in the Hammer Throw. Shelton placed 18th overall.
Hank Bowen jumped a season best 6.11m in Long Jump. Bowen placed 15th overall. Bowen placed 10th in High Jump with a collegiate best 1.71m.
Jaidyn Hicks jumped a personal best 5.88m in Long Jump. Hicks placed 19th overall.
