MHU closes out six-game homestand flawless, advance to 6-0
Lions defeat Newberry in SAC opener, Jon Brandtner leads team with 12 points.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's basketball team (6-0, 1-0 SAC) defeated Newberry (4-2, 1-1 SAC) by a score of 84-66 Wednesday evening inside Chambers Gymnasium in their South Atlantic Conference opener.
The Lions hit over 48 percent of their shots in the first half, going over 46 percent from beyond the arc. Jaheim Taylor hit both three-pointers attempted, ending the half with six points. Keenan Wilkins led the Lions with seven points in the half. Defensively, Ashton Troutman led all players with five rebounds.
The offense continued to roll in the second half as the team hit 57 percent of their shots. Jaylen Bates, Jon Brandtner, Marvin Hires, Caden Owens, and Aljaz Vidmar combined to go a perfect 12-for-12 with Brandtner's nine points leading all Lions. Bates led the team with two assists while the duo of Brandtner and Alejandro Ford pulled down three rebounds apiece.
In a balanced outing for the Lions, Brandtner led the team with 12 points while Wilkins ended the night with 11 and Taylor closed out the game with 10 points. Troutman led the Lions with seven rebounds, adding four points while both Brandtner and Ford added five rebounds apiece.
Bates led the Lions with four assists, adding eight points. Vidmar went 4-for-4 from the floor for nine points, adding two rebounds two assists, and one steal.
The Lions take to the road for the first time in the campaign, traveling to Anderson, South Carolina to face the Trojans. Tipoff on Saturday, December 6 is set for 4 p.m.
