Lions land four on All-SAC teams, Willoughby-Williams named Freshman of the Year
The Mars Hill men's soccer team placed four on the 2021 Men's Soccer All-South Atlantic Conference teams, as released by the league Tuesday morning.
ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Mars Hill men's soccer team placed four on the 2021 Men's Soccer All-South Atlantic Conference teams, as released by the league Tuesday morning.
Seniors Sebastian Bertilsson and Jeppe Christensen were tabbed First Team selections while freshmen Kevonte Willoughby-Williams and Peter Plougmand garnered Second Team honors. Willoughby-Williams was also named the SAC Freshman of the Year.
Bertilsson, a forward from Falkenberg, Sweden, set career-highs in every category this season, highlighted by his 12 goals, placing fourth in the league. His 30 points were second in the conference. The team captain enters the SAC Semifinals with 61 career points (25 goals, 11 assists) and six game-winning goals.
Christensen, a defender from Aalborg, Denmark, was recognized by the SAC for the fourth time in his career. Christensen was an All-SAC Honorable Mention his first two seasons and a Second Team honoree in the spring of 2021. He set career-highs in goals (1), assists (4), and points (6) this season. Over his career, Christensen appeared in 61 contests with 59 starts.
The freshmen duo of Willoughby-Williams and Plougmand exploded onto the scene for the Lions this season, combining for 17 goals and 46 points.
Plougmand, a native of Odense, Denmark, netted eight goals and added three assists. His most prolific goal came against No. 21 Lenoir-Rhyne in the SAC Quarterfinals in overtime, sending the Lions to the SAC Semifinals for the first time since 2014. Earlier in the season, Plougmand amassed a four-game point streak, collecting seven points (3g, 1a) during that span.
Willoughby-Williams scored nine goals and added seven assists during his freshman campaign, garnering Freshman of the Year honors from the league.
His defining performance came against USC Aiken where, in only his fourth collegiate game, he netted a hat-trick for six points. In conference play, Willoughby-Williams collected four points (1g, 2a) versus Lincoln Memorial, three (1g, 1a) versus Tusculum, and scored the game-winning goal versus Catawba while assisting on the game-winner on Senior Day versus Newberry.
