Mars Hill claims three events in Montreat Open
Will Wainwright sets NCAA provisional qualifying mark in Javelin, taking the event.
BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's outdoor track & field team traveled to Black Mountain, North Carolina to compete in the Montreat Open hosted by Montreat. The meet took place over two days. The Lions captured three event wins over the weekend, one NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark was met, several top-eight finishes, and numerous personal bests.
Event Wins
Will Wainwright took first place in the men's Javelin with a throw of 59.73m (195' 11''). This marks provisionally qualifies Wainwright for NCAA D2 Nationals. Wainwright has the farthest throw in the conference thus far this outdoor season.
Luke New took first place in the men's Pole Vault with a Personal Best 4.4m. New broke the school record of 4.28m, a record that's stood since 2002.
Justin Owens captured first place in the men's 10,000m run with a time of 32:32.27.
On the Track
Several personal bests were set throughout the day by the Lions beginning with Levi Hill in the 110m Hurdles. Hill placed 3rd overall with a time of 15.31s, and currently ranks 3rd in Conference standings.
Connor Cecil placed 12th in the 400m run with a personal best time of 52.14s.
DJ Chadwell established a personal best 4:05.45 in the 1500m run. Chadwell placed 7th overall.
Aiden Burton competed in the 100m sprint, finishing with a personal best 10.96s. Burton placed 6th overall.
Justin Kwakye won his heat in the 200m sprint with a personal best 22.66s. Kwakye placed 7th overall on the day.
Matthew O'Connor placed 2nd in the 10000m run with a personal best 33:12.04.
Eli Taylor placed 3rd in the 10000m run with a time of 33:44.76
In the Field
Luke New competed in Men's Javelin, placing 3rd overall with a personal best 47.76m.
Will Wainwright placed 4th in Discus with a personal best throw of 47.65m. Wainwright ranks 1st in the SAC at present.
Iggy Welch placed 5th in Discus with a personal best 47.36m. Welch ranks 2nd behind Wainwright in Conference standings. Welch placed 3rd in Shot Put with a throw of 14.39m. His mark ranks 2nd in Conference standings at this time.
Jack Zalevskiy and Preston Wright both established collegiate bests in Discus. Zalevskiy placed 13th with a throw of 39.61m. Wright placed 26th with a throw of 32.14m.
Zalevskiy placed 7th in Hammer Throw with a collegiate best 43.02m, a throw that also ranks him 7th in Conference Standings.
