Mars Hill competes at Winthrop Invitational
ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Mars Hill men's outdoor track & field team traveled to Rock Hill, S.C. to compete in the Winthrop Invitational Friday, April 17th and Saturday, April 18th.
Despite the blistering heat, several Lions set personal bests and picked up event wins. One new school record and one NCAA Provisional mark was met.
NCAA Provisional Mark
Will Wainwright picked up the event win in Javelin with a throw of 60.27m. Will is provisionally qualified for Nationals with this mark and currently ranks 54th in the Nation. Wainwright ranks 1st in SAC standings as the team gears up for Outdoor SAC Championships.
New School Record
Luke New placed 2nd in pole vault with a new personal best and new school record vault of 4.45m.
Event Wins
Eli Taylor earned the event win in the 3000m Steeplechase with a time of 10:10.89. Taylor set a new personal best in the race by over four seconds.
Will Wainwright picked up a second event win over the weekend in Discus with a throw of 47.26m. This mark is Wainwrights second farthest on the season as he prepares for Conference. Wainwright ranks 1st in Conference Standings.
DJ Chadwell placed 1st in the 1500m run with a time of 4:02.43.
On the Track
Luke New finished with a personal best 11.40s in the 100m sprint.
DJ Chadwell placed 5th in the 800m run with a personal best 1:57.03.
Brandon McNulty picked up two personal bests, one in the 1500m run and one in the 800m run. McNulty PR'd by 7 seconds in the 1500m run with a time of 4:06.07, finishing 6th overall. McNulty PR'd in the 800 with a time of 2:00.25, finishing 7th.
Charles Fuerneisen set new personal bests in both his races. Fuerneisen placed 8th in the 1500m run with a time of 4:08.89 and 9th in the 800m run with a time of 2:02.14.
Mason Smith set new personal bests in both the 1500m run and 800m run. Richardson finished with a time of 4:32.84 in the 1500m run and 2:07.62 in the 800m run.
Luke Capps picked up a personal best in the 1500m run, finishing with a time of 4:28.60.
In the Field
Preston Wright earned trips to the finals in all three of his events – Discus, Hammer, and Shot Put. Wright picked up two personal bests, one in discus and one in the hammer throw. Wright placed 9th in Discus with a personal best 37.35m. Wright placed 6th in Hammer with a personal best 41.49m. Wright placed 8th in Shot Put with a throw of 12.57m.
Luke New earned a trip to the finals in Javelin, placing 6th with a throw of 45.18m.
Iggy Welch found the finals in all three of his events – Shot Put, Discus, and Hammer. Welch placed 2nd in Shot Put with an outdoor best 14.53m. Welch placed 5th in Discus with a throw of 41.22m. Welch placed 8th in Hammer with a throw of 40.29m.
Jack Zalevskiy advanced to the finals in both Discus and Hammer Throw. Zalevskiy placed 6th in Discus with a throw of 40.58m and 4th in Hammer with a throw of 45.44m
Next up, several from the team will travel to Wester Carolina University to compete in the Catamount Classic Friday, April 24th & Saturday, April 25th.
