MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's lacrosse team (2-10, 1-6 SAC) was defeated by Coker (7-6, 3-5 SAC) in double overtime by a score of 14-13 Saturday afternoon.
The Cobras tied the contest with 1:47 remaining in regulation off of Kaleb Hiltz's second goal.
A costly Mars Hill penalty late in the second overtime frame allowed Jackson Duke to rip the game-winning shot into the back of the net for his only goal of the game.
The Lions led 3-1 after the first 15 minutes with goals form Hudson Semple, Sam Arendt, and James Hartley. Trading goals in the second, Coker outscored the Lions 4-3 in the frame and entered the half trailing 6-5. Jake Mannix scored twice for Mars Hill while Aiden McNamara added a tally.
In the third, the Lions netted three with Arendt picking up two points (1G, 1A) in the frame. Caden Costa and Charlie Howland each scored for the Lions.
The fourth saw 10 combined goals with the Cobras netting six. For the Lions, Howland, Hartley, and Luke Moore combined for the four Mars Hill goals with Moore striking twice. Caleb Nelson picked up two assists.
Arendt led the Lions with two goals and an assist for three points while Howland, Moore, Hartley, and Mannix each ended the contest with two goals apiece.
Xavier Wells faced 37 shots, making 24 saves on the day.
At the conclusion of the contest, seniors Liam Murray and AJ Howland were recognized and celebrated for their contributions to the program.
The Lions return to the field on Saturday, April 18 when they face Catawba. First faceoff is set for 3 p.m. on the road.
