Jessica Viscusi has been named the 2015 South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete for Woman’s Track & Field
ROCK HILL, S.C.- Mars Hill senior Jessica Viscusi has been named the 2015 South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete for Woman's Track & Field, conference officials announced on Tuesday. Viscusi earns the honor for the second consecutive year.
"Jessica is the best athlete I have ever coached," said Mars Hill head coach Mike Owens. "She has been named All-Region 15 times in her career and has received the top two academic scholarships. To balance everything she does while being a three-sport athlete is amazing."
Viscusi, a Chemistry major from Bryson City, N.C. with a 3.85 GPA, has made the Dean's List and SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll the three years. Viscusi is a Bonner Scholarship recipient, a Grayson Scholarship recipient and Marshbanks-Anderson Honor Scholarship recipient.
This season Viscusi set new school records in the 5,000 meter run and 3,000 meter Steeplechase. She along with Faith Trammell were the first runners in school history to finish in the 17-minute bracket in the 5,000 meters. Viscusi scored a sixth place finish as she crossed the finish line in 17:44.26. At the Tennessee Relays on April 11, Viscusi set the record in the 3,000 meter Steeplechase as she finished in 11:12.53. She earned SAC AstroTurf Women's Track Runner of the Week honors on March 26.
On campus, Viscusi is the secretary of the Chemistry Honor Club and a SAAC representative. Viscusi is active in the Mars Hill community, having volunteered at the Madison County food drive, Madison County Day of Service and Madison County backpack program. She has also volunteered as a counselor at the Asheville-Buncombe Community Crisis Ministry, Habitat for Humanity and has been a day camp volunteer at the Swain County Recreation Park.
Viscusi finishes her Mars Hill career with three SAC Scholar-Athlete honors, winning the first two Women's Track accolades as well as the 2014 Women's Cross Country title.
Last week Viscusi was named the Mars Hill Woman of the Year for the second consecutive year. The Woman of the Year award honors the Mars Hill female student-athlete for their accomplishments on the field, in the classroom and in the greater Mars Hill community.
The SAC Faculty Athletic Representatives Committee selects the winner in each of the conference's 18 championship sports.
