MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's soccer team (1-1) defeated Glenville State (0-1) Sunday afternoon inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium by a score of 1-0.
After a scoreless first half that saw the Pioneers hold a 6-4 shot advantage, it was Mars Hill who broke the ice in the 58th minute.
In transition, Mia Calderon crossed the ball to Saga Karlsson Rowa, from right to left, and after one touch, Karlsson Rowa ripped a shot in the upper right corner of the net, scoring the lone goal of the contest and her first career marker.
The Pioneers continued to pressure throughout the half, outshooting Mars Hill 11-3, but goalkeeper Peyton Pierson was up to the task, stopping all seven shots that came her way throughout the match, holding on to the clean sheet for her first win as a Lion and first shutout of the year.
Samantha Swinson led the Lions with two shot attempts while Solares Solano led all players with eight attempts and three on target.
Mars Hill takes to the road on Wednesday, Sept. 10 when they face Lees-McRae. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
