MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's soccer team (1-3, 0-1 SAC) was defeated by Newberry (3-0-1, 1-0 SAC) by a score of 1-0 Sunday afternoon.
At the two-minute mark, True Arellano-Homan tapped in a cross from Haylee Patino for the lone goal of the contest.
Despite trailing 1-0 in the half, Mars Hill rallied off four shot attempts, nearly tying the game off of a Saga Karlsson Rowa shot that just sailed over the cross bar. Kayleigh Mallare, with three minutes left in the half, lobbed a shot that was barely kept out by Madison Gutierrez.
The second half saw Newberry outshoot Mars Hill 4-1, capping off an 8-5 advantage throughout the day.
Patino led all players with three shot attempts while Mallare led the Lions with two. Karlsson Rowa, Mia Calderon, and Vera Dandanell each added one apiece.
Kayleigh Palmer, in relief effort, made four saves on all four shots she saw. Gutierrez made the lone Newberry save for her third shutout of the season.
Mars Hill returns to the pitch on Friday, September 19 when they host Anderson. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
