JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The Mars Hill softball team (6-1) won all four games they played this past weekend as part of the Big Region Preseason Invitational.
GAME ONE: MHU 13, D&E 4 - 8 Innings
The Lions exploded for nine extra inning runs to take the first game of the invitational over Davis & Elkins.
Tied at four entering the top of the eighth, the scoring onslaught began with Bri Weimer's RBI single up the middle, plating Leah Grimes. Sydney Hodges, later in the inning and leading 8-4, put the Lions in double-digits with a two-run double, collecting her third RBI of the game.
Hodges led the team with three hits and three RBI while Weimer and Brooke Hanson added two hits apiece.
GAME TWO: MHU 6, CON 5
Mars Hill's four-run first inning held despite Converse's late comeback bid.
The Lions' first two runs were scored due to aggressive baserunning with two double steals. Back-to-back RBI doubles from Brooke Hanson and Camryn Sterling boosted the Lions' lead to four after the first frame.
Tied at four entering the sixth, a pair of sacrifice flies from Hanson and Sterling put the Lions up two, with Sterling's third RBI proving to be the game-winning run.
The Lions swept Sunday's slate with just four hits in game two as Blyth Freeman picked up her first win of the season, allowing just one run on three hits in four innings thrown.
GAME THREE: MHU 14, CONCORD 8
Mars Hill's offense continued to click on Monday, putting up 14 runs on 15 hits in their win over Concord.
Despite giving up six runs in the second, the Lions clawed their way to the top, led by Bri Weimer's 4-for-4 day at the plate, collecting three RBI. Weimer ended the day a home run shy of the cycle.
Linde Cline added a three-run home run in the top of the seventh to tie Weimer with a game-high three RBI on the day. Sadie Cecil notched a career-high with three hits in the contest, scoring a game-high four runs.
Kiersten Gosnell earned her first win of the season.
GAME FOUR: MHU 2, KU 1 - 8 Innings
To complete the sweep, Mars Hill pulled out a tight 2-1 win over King in a defensive battle.
Scoreless through seven innings, Sadie Cecil broke through for Mars Hill with a two-run single up the middle, her second hit of the contest. Katie Ryan's RBI groundout in the bottom of the frame was the only blemish for the Lions.
Both Cecil and Sara Rexrode led the team with two hits apiece.
Kamryn Akins was stellar on the mound for Mars Hill, allowing one unearned run on five hits while striking out a career-high 12 batters for the complete game victory, improving to 2-0 on the year.
