Lions sweep NGU, win ninth straight

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill softball team (15-3) swept North Greenville (8-8) by scores of 8-5 and 7-4 Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action.
GAME ONE: MHU 8, NGU 5
Tied at five entering the bottom of the fourth, a three-run inning, highlighted by solo home runs off the bats of Brooke Hanson and Sadie Cecil, propelled the Lions to victory. Later in the frame, with the bases loaded, Camryn Sterling drew a bases loaded walk to put Mars Hill up by three.
In the sixth inning, both teams recorded a solo home run with the Trailblazers' coming off the bat of Hayley Whitesides and with Mars Hill's Maia Sholter responding.
The Lions went up 4-0 through two as Leah Grimes plated two in the first with a single to left. Sholter, in the second, doubled down the left field line, scoring both Cecil and Bri Weimer.
Sholter led all players with three hits and three RBI. Cecil led the Lions with three runs scored.
Karly Gentry earned the win, allowing four runs on six hits in 4.0 innings. Blyth Freeman collected the save, her second of the season. She threw 3.0 innings, allowing one run on two hits.
GAME TWO: MHU 7, NGU 4 - 6 Innings
Game two of the non-conference doubleheader was called in the sixth inning, due to darkness.
The Lions started strong once again, recording three runs in the first, highlighted by Sadie Cecil's two-run double down the left field line.
After North Greenville tied the game in the top of the second, Bri Weimer's RBI single in the bottom of the frame put the Lions back up by one.
In the third, Both Weimer and Daci Sarver recorded RBI singles to push the Lions' lead to three, before in the fifth, Sarver smacked a solo shot over the left field fence to go up by four.
Weimer, Cecil, and Sarver each recorded two hits and two RBI in the contest to lead all players.
Kamryn Akins allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out four to earn the complete game victory and move to 7-0 on the year.
Mars Hill takes to the diamond on Thursday, March 5 when they face Southern Wesleyan. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. on the road.
