Grimes' grand slam earns split versus Catawba

SALISBURY, N.C. - The Mars Hill softball team (25-9, 6-4 SAC) split their Tuesday series with Catawba (21-14, 7-3 SAC), taking game one by a score of 11-6, but dropping game two, 9-2.
GAME ONE: MHU 11, CAT 6
Mars Hill scored 10 unanswered runs, including a nine-run seventh inning, to come from behind and take game one.
In the top of the sixth, Leah Grimes' RBI double cut the defiicit to four, 6-2. As the Lions hit in the seventh, following a RBI single from Sydney Hodges and a bases loaded walk drawn from Camryn Sterling, Grimes cleared the bases with a go-ahead grand slam, as the Lions' took their first lead of the contest, 8-6. To cap off the inning, Jessica Senn and Bri Weimer each collected RBI to put the Lions up by five.
Five Lions recorded two hits on the day as Grimes, Hodges, Alexis Nanney, Maia Sholter, and Sadie Cecil combined for 10 of the Lions' 11 hits. Grimes led all players with five RBI with a double and home run.
Kamryn Akins struck out eight in 5.0 innings for the start, allowing four runs on seven hits. Maddy Lowry was credited with the win, throwing 2.0 scoreless frames, allowing just three hits.
GAME TWO: CAT 9, MHU 2
The Catawba Indians evened the series with a dominant game two performance, scoring seven unanswered runs, including back-to-back three runs frames in the fifth and sixth.
Micaela Hartman led all players with three hits, driving in one. Alexis Monroe, Maddy Altiers, Abbey Nixon, and Bella Boykin each picked up two RBI.
For the Lions, Leah Grimes hit her second home run of the day, a two-run shot in the top of the fourth to tie the game at two.
Dakotah Wilkins was credited with the win, throwing 5.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits.
Mars Hill returns to Ponder Field on Saturday, April 4 when they host Lincoln Memorial. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
