MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill softball team (22-5, 3-1 SAC) swept Emory & Henry (17-11, 3-3 SAC) by scores of 4-1 and 6-4 Thursday afternoon at Ponder Field.
GAME ONE: MHU 4, E&H 1
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, tied at one, Mars Hill's Camryn Sterling cleared the bases with a double to right center, pushing the Lions ahead late.
Kamryn Akins clinched her 10th win of the season with a one-two-three seventh inning, taking game one.
Mars Hill recorded six hits on the day, one apiece from Sterling, Brooklyn Nanney, Bri Weimer, Sadie Cecil, Maia Sholter, and Sydney Hodges.
Akins struck out 10, allowing just two hits on the day.
GAME TWO: MHU 6, E&H 4
The Lions held off the Wasps late in game two to clinch the series and sweep.
In the top of the fourth, down by three, the Wasps hit back-to-back solo home runs, off the bats of Kylie Cundiff and Greenly Elliott to pull within one.
The Wasps, in top of fifth, loaded the bases, but a strong pitching performance from Maddy Lowry worked the Lions out of the jam to maintain the lead. In the bottom of the frame, Bri Weimer launched a solo shot over the right field wall to rebuild the Lions' two-run advantage.
Mars Hill trailed 2-1 entering the second before Daci Sarver's two-run home run gave the Lions their first lead of the game. In the third, RBI doubles from Sadie Cecil and Maia Sholter put the Lions up by three.
Weimer and Sholter led all players with two hits while Sholter and Sarver led the Lions with two RBI.
Karly Gentry threw 3.2 innings in the start, striking out four. Lowry earned her first win of the season, going 3.1 innings, allowing just one hit.
The Lions take to the road on Saturday, March 21 when they face Coker. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
