Lions defeated in extras versus Southern Wesleyan
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (6-11) was defeated in 10 innings versus Southern Wesleyan (6-13) by a score of 6-3.
The Lions trailed 3-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth. Their comeback bid began with RBI singles off the bats of Terick Bumgarner and Colin Holmes. Later, with the bases loaded, Carter Potts drew a walk, allowing Bumgarner to score the game-tying run.
Southern Wesleyan responded in the top of the tenth, plating three runs, highlighted by Matthew McCaffrey's two-run triple to right field. Seth Pettett added a RBI single to center to plate their sixth run of the contest.
Scoreless through four, the Warriors opened the scoring as McCaffrey came home while the Lions turned two. Kade Bowling, in the sixth and eighth innings, collected RBI off of a double and single, respectively.
Ethan Shimmel led the team with three hits followed by two apiece from Bowling, McCaffrey, Pettett, and Luke Taylor. Bowling and McCaffrey led the team with two RBI aside.
Holmes led the Lions with three hits while he, Bumgarner, and Potts each collected one RBI.
Lukas Arvantides threw 8.0 innings, allowing one run on four hits while striking out for in the no decision. Matthew White was credited with the win, throwing a scoreless ninth. Ash Faulk earned the save, striking out two in the 10th.
Cameron Brown threw 4.0 scoreless innings in the start for Mars Hill.
The Lions return to South Atlantic Conference play on Friday, March 6 when they host Lenoir-Rhyne. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Henderson Field.
