SALISBURY, N.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (3-9, 2-4 SAC) was swept by No. 5 Catawba (11-1, 6-0 SAC), falling by scores of 9-2, 5-2, and 5-3, this past Friday and Saturday.
GAME ONE: CAT 9, MHU 2
Catawba scored nine unanswered runs to take game one of the three game series, outscoring the Lions 9-2.
Tied at two entering the third, Matthew Connolly launched a two-run home run to put Catawba up 4-2. In the fifth, they added four runs to build their lead to six.
The Lions opened the scoring in the first, with the bases loaded. Chapel Matson was hit by a pitch to score Alejandro Aguilar. Yeriel Pastrana then put the Lions up by two with a single through the left side of the infield.
Aguilar, Pastrana, Carter Potts, and Mel Rubiera each recorded a hit for the Lions.
GAME TWO: CAT 5, MHU 2
A four-run eighth inning propelled Catawba to victory, earning the series win.
Trailing 2-1, Matthew Connolly played hero once more with a two-run double to left, plating the go-ahead run. Both Ty Hubbard and Jack Cuba recorded RBI sacrifice bunts for insurance runs.
The Lions trailed 1-0 after six. In the top of the seventh, Mel Rubiera's single through the right side with the bases loaded plated both Peyton Starkey and Carter Potts to put Mars Hill up 2-1.
Mars Hill was held to three hits, coming off the bats of Rubiera, Potts, and Starkey.
Collin Chappel had a solid starting effort, throwing six innings, allowing one run on two hits while striking out four.
GAME THREE: CAT 5, MHU 3
For the third straight game, Catawba completed a late comeback bid, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth, trailing 3-2 entering the frame.
Brandon Crabtree tied the game at three with a RBI double. Later in the inning, Hunter Atkins' two-run home run proved to be the game-winning play for the nationally ranked Catawba Indians.
Mars Hill trailed 2-1 entering the fourth. Peyton Starkey blasted a solo home run to left, recording his second RBI of the day to tie the game. Later in the frame, Zachary Cimino's RBI double to right scored Evan Ashe for the go-ahead run.
Starkey led the Lions with two hits and two RBI.
The Lions return to the diamond on Tuesday, February 24 when they face Emmanuel on the road. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
