AIKEN, S.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (0-2) opened their 2026 campaign on the road, falling to USC Aiken (2-0) by scores of 6-3 and 10-0 Friday afternoon.
GAME ONE: USCA 6, MHU 3
The Lions opened the scoring in the top of the fourth with Chapel Matson's RBI single plating Terick Bumgarner. Later in the frame, Peyton Starkey blasted a two-run home run to left to put the Lions up 3-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Pacers tied the game at three, kicking off the run with a RBI double off the bat of Yariel Diaz. A solo home run from Evan Harding in the bottom of the sixth put the Pacers up for the first time in the contest.
Blake Martin's two-run double in the bottom of the eighth capped off the Pacers' offense, scoring six unanswered to claim game one.
Starkey led the Lions with two hits and two RBI. Matson, Alejandro Aguilar, Yeriel Pastrana, and Gavyn Miller each posted hits for the Lions.
GAME TWO: USCA 10, MHU 0
Ben Shepherd threw a complete game no-hitter to secure the Friday sweep for USC Aiken.
The Pacers used the long ball to score seven of their runs, highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of Yariel Diaz. Diaz, along with Blake Martin and Ryan Becker, led all players with two hits.
Mars Hill returns to action Tuesday, February 3 when they face Belmont Abbey. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. on the road.
