MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (16-17-1, 12-8-1 SAC) secured a massive South Atlantic Conference series win, sweeping Anderson (17-17, 5-16 SAC) over the weekend.
GAME ONE: MHU 7, AU 3
The Lions took game on Friday afternoon by a score of 7-3.
Trailing 3-2 entering the bottom of the sixth, with the bases loaded, Mars Hill rallied ahead with a bases clearing double from Terick Bumgarner, putting the Hill back up, 5-3. Bumgarner later scored off of a sacrifice fly from Peyton Starkey.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Lions tacked on an additional insurance run off of a Trojans' balk.
Mars Hill opened the scoring in the first as Chapel Matson drew a bases loaded walk to score Alejandro Aguilar. A sacrifice fly from Gavyn Miller put the Lions up by two at the end of one.
Bumgarner led all players with three RBI in the contest while eight different Lions recorded hits.
Reid Withers earned the win, throwing 3.2, allowing just one hit while striking out seven. Austin Kutz threw 5.1 in the start, allowing three runs on seven hits.
GAME TWO: MHU 4, AU 0
Mars Hill secured the series win with a four-hit shutout in game two Saturday afternoon.
Collin Chappel threw 6.0 innings, striking out six for the win. In 3.0 innings of relief work, Brady Stephens earned his fourth save of the year, striking out three and allowing just one hit.
Chapel Matson and Peyton Starkey led the Lions with two hits apiece while Matson, Evan Ashe, and Yeriel Pastrana collected one RBI aside.
GAME THREE: MHU 4, AU 1
The Lions' pitching remained strong in game three as Jacob Davis threw a two-hit, complete game gem to pick up his fifth win of the season.
The Lions scored four unanswered runs, including two apiece in both the third and sixth innings. Carter Potts, in the third, put the Lions up 2-1 with a RBI groundout, plating Peyton Starkey.
In the sixth, Chapel Matson's RBI single extended the lead to two while Gavin Miller's RBI groundout scored Mel Rubiera for the insurance marker.
Rubiera, Matson, and Starkey recorded the Lions' three hits on the afternoon en route to their 12th SAC win of the season.
Mars Hill closes out their four-game homestand on Tuesday, March 31 when they host Emmanuel. First pitch at Henderson Field is set for 3 p.m.
