MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (7-13-1, 5-6-1 SAC) drew with No. 10 Lenoir-Rhyne (14-7-1, 7-4-1 SAC) this weekend, taking game one, falling in game two, and ending game three tied at five with the game called due to darkness.
GAME ONE: MHU 6, L-R 5 - 11 Innings
The Lions opened the series with a thrilling 6-5 extra innings victory.
After Lenoir-Rhyne scored two in the top of the ninth to force extras, the teams went scoreless in the tenth. In the bottom of the 11th, Mel Rubiera blooped a single into shallow left field. The oncoming Bear made a diving effort, but when landing, dropped the ball, allowing Peyton Starkey to score from first.
Mars Hill opened the scoring in the second with the first of four home runs off the Bears' pitching staff. Terick Bumgarner blasted a solo shot to left field.
After the Bears jumped ahead 2-1 in the top of the third, Yeriel Pastrana's two-run homer put the Lions back up by one. Chapel Matson, in the fourth, and Carter Potts, in the seventh, each hit solo shots to put the Lions up 5-2 heading into the eighth.
Seth Christmas, in the top of the eighth, hit a solo home run to pull Lenoir-Rhyne within one, and, in the top of the ninth, Lleyton Lackey's two-run single up the middle tied the game at five.
Rubiera and Dawson Anderson led the Lions with two hits apiece while Pastrana led the team with two RBI.
Austin Kutz threw a solid 7.0 innings, allowing just two hits and two runs while striking out six for the no decision. In relief, Dustin Dunlap earned the win, allowing one hit in 2.0 innings.
GAME TWO: L-R 9, MHU 1
The Bears responded in game one of Saturday's double-header, steadily putting up nine runs throughout the contest to even the series.
Mackenzie Wainwright, Seth Christmas, Xavier Mann, Andrew Muraco, and Nathan Kidder each recorded two hits while Wainwright led all players with three RBI.
Mel Rubiera and Yeriel Pastrana led the Lions with two hits apiece while the Lions' lone run was scored off of a sacrifice fly off the bat of Zachary Cimino.
GAME THREE: L-R 5, MHU 5 - Game Called Due to Darkness in Bottom of 6th
The teams put up identical line scores in what was supposed to be the series deciding third game.
The Bears jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after their first inning at-bats, highlighted by Seth Christmas' two-run home run. The Lions answered back in the bottom of the frame as Peyton Starkey plated both Alejandro Aguilar and Chapel Matson with a double down the right field line.
Mars Hill jumped ahead, 4-3, in the second. Aguilar's single allowed Evan Ashe to score and another Lenoir-Rhyne error later in the inning saw Aguilar cross home for the go-ahead run.
Sylas Boris, in the top of the fourth, smashed a two-run home run to left to leapfrog the Lions, but in the bottom of the frame, with the bases loaded, a wild pitch allowed Carter Potts to score the game-tying run.
With darkness encroaching in the fifth, the teams played through until the bottom of the sixth.
The trio of Aguilar, Starkey, and Ashe led the Lions with two hits apiece.
Jacob Davis got the start, allowing four earned runs on six hits in 4.0 innings, striking out two. Dustin Dunlap, in his second appearance of the series, threw another scoreless 2.0 innings, allowing three hits.
Mars Hill closes out their five-game home stand on Tuesday, March 10 when they host Young Harris. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
