WINGATE, N.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (9-15-1, 6-8-1 SAC) fell two games to one versus Wingate (21-5, 12-3 SAC) in their three-game series on the road, taking game three by a score of 7-3.
GAME ONE: WU 6, MHU 5
The Lions put a late rally together, scoring two in the top of the eighth to pull within one. However, the Bulldogs staved off the comeback effort, taking game one of the series.
Offensively, the Bulldogs were led by both Bowen Powell and David Sessoms' three hits while Jake Courville went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
The Lions recorded five hits on the day off the bats of Alejandro Aguilar, Carter Potts, Mel Rubiera, Terick Bumgarner, and Yeriel Pastrana. Peyton Starkey led the team with two RBI.
GAME TWO: WU 7, MHU 5
Mars Hill led 5-1 entering the bottom of the eighth before the Bulldogs' offense plated six, going up 7-5 late in the contest to steal game two and claim the series.
Jalen Evans tied the game at five with a two-run double to left center. Later in the inning, he, along with Will Farrell, scored off of Bowen Powell's two-run single, proving to be the game-winning runs.
Powell led all players with three RBI while he and Evans led Wingate with two hits apiece.
Peyton Starkey and Yeriel Pastrana led the Lions with two hits while Starkey, Carter Potts, Mel Rubiera, and Evan Ashe were each credited with one RBI apiece.
Collin Chappel threw a strong 6.2 innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out a game-high seven.
GAME THREE: MHU 7, WU 3
The Lions plated seven through the middle frames of the seven-inning series ender, taking a game from the nationally ranked Bulldogs.
Mel Rubiera and Yeriel Pastrana led the team with two hits apiece while Rubiera, Alejandro Aguilar, Carter Potts, Chapel Matson, and Terick Bumgarner each collected one RBI apiece.
Jacob Davis threw 6.0 innings for his third win of the season, striking out six while allowing two runs on five hits.
The Lions return to the diamond on Wednesday, March 18 when they host King in non-conference play. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
