Mars Hill upsets No. 9 Young Harris
Lions powered by four-run sixth inning.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (8-13-1) upset No. 9 Young Harris (18-4) by a score of 5-3 Tuesday afternoon inside Henderson Field.
Tied at one entering the bottom of the sixth, the Lions used a four-run frame to pull away.
Terick Bumgarner started the run with a single to left that plated Chapel Matson. Both he and Evan Ashe scored off of Peyton Starkey's two-run single up the middle, building the Lions' lead to three. Later in the inning, Yeriel Pastrana plated Jack Davis with a single to right.
Young Harris fought back in the top of the ninth as Keypher Contreras pulled the team within two with a two-run home run.
Matson opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a RBI double to right, scoring Mel Rubiera. In the top of the second, Jack Enrico tied the game with a solo home run to right.
Matson, Ashe, Bumgarner, Starkey, Davis, and Pastrana were responsible for each of the Lions' six hits in the contest.
Cameron Brown threw a solid 8.0 innings, allowing three runs on four hits, striking out three. Brady Stephens clinched the win with a scoreless ninth frame, earning the save.
The Lions return to the diamond on Friday, March 13 when they face Wingate on the road. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
