Men’s Soccer Defeats Newberry
Lions stay undefeated in SAC
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Lions' men's soccer team defeated Newberry College, 4-1 Wednesday night in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. Mars Hill, ranked sixth in the Southeast Region, improved to 6-2 on the season and undefeated in the SAC with a 3-0 record. Newberry fell to an even 4-4 on the year and 0-2 in the conference.
Gregg Munn scored the Lions' first goal of the match at the 24:40 mark on a header off a cross from Juan Kromschroder. Stephen Bivens recorded Mars Hill's second goal in the 29th minute on a breakaway pass from Troy Chavez. Alex Mullen ended the scoring in the first half of play finding the back of the net from about 20 yards out. That goal was unassisted. Mars Hill outshot the Wolves 10-5 in the first half of play.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Rury Caulfield scored from 25 yards out on a pass from Kromschroder to give the Lions a 4-0 advantage. Joao Delgado scored at the 63:20 mark on a pass from Stephen Harvey to put the Wolves on the board (4-1).
MHC outshot the Wolves, 18-9. The Lions edged Newberry in corner kicks, 2-0. MHC was called offsides twice. Zac Scott played all 90 minutes in goal for Mars Hill and made three saves. Joel Johnson also played the entire match in goal for the Wolves and made four saves.
MHC will play at SAC rival Brevard College on Saturday, October 1. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
